Making Tibetan Bowls Sing

Posted on the January 23rd, 2010 under Science

If you have Tibetan Singing Bowls in your hand, it remains free to vibrate. Then, you can gently glide a mallet across the edge of it. This is what causes the singing noise, often used for Tibetan meditation. You can also quietly bump the wall of the bowl. This generates a bell-like chord. Either style you use crystal singing bowls, it is the vibrations that create the sound, similar to if you glide your finger around the edge of a champagne glass. The pitch of the sound can vary depending on the bowl width. Bowls can be as wide as six to 15 inches. You can also increase the mallet velocity to modify the sound.
